Hospitality to cure the fatigue of visiters
There are many shops and restaurants around shrine. Those with a sweet tooth will love AKAFUKU , a mochi rice cake wrapped in azuki bean jam, but the most recommended food is Ise udon noodles.
It is known for their extremely soft texture, it is totally different from udon noodles of other areas. They are said to be easy on the digestion of weary worship visitors who have traveled from distant regions to come over to Ise Jingu.
Another character that is different from other local udon noodles is the sauce. The color is black and looks very strong and salty. But do not hesitate to bite it. You will feel the opposite impression from your eyes, actually it is not salty and has the taste of dashi soup stock.
Unique visual and taste
The history of Ise udon noodles began before the Edo period which is over 400years ago, they put miso extract on it at first. Now the sauce is made from tamari soy sauce and dashi soup stock of shaved bonito and minuscule dried fish. It is well balanced with sweetness of tamari and flavorful dashi. Ise udon noodles are not in the soup, the super thick and soft noodles are eaten mixed with the sauce.
It is basically served with sliced green onion, however the variety of toppings such as eggs or grated yam are found at each restaurant. They have their own recipes of sauce, savoring several bowls and find your best will be an interesting experience.
The photo is the cold Ise udon and assorted tempura at “Isobeya” located on the way to the Iseshi station from the Geku.
"Isobe-ya Shokudo" near Ise city station is a delicious udon dining restaurant.
